This has to be one of the more international treats that exist. Originally created in Denmark, I have stumbled across this in various European countries, as well as the Middle East. Apparently it exists as well in Latin America and Asia. In any case, each country has a slightly different taste to it and not all have a cookie base. Also the packaging is a bit different per country. Some are in boxes, others come wrapped in foil and then placed in boxes… ok ok… they all seem to come in boxes to protect them. 🙂
What is rather interesting is that in many European countries, this sweet item had a not so sweet name where they tended to be referred to with a racist term referring to people of black/African origin which I will leave for the reader to figure out. Of course, these names were changed to variations of chocolate or cream kiss for the most part.
Now-a-days, they can be enjoyed without the problematic… branding. I personally enjoy consuming from the marshmallow top and saving the cookie bottom last. Which way do you guys prefer? Also, how is it prepared in your country?
