A song of lecker: Dilekerei

A little note on languages. When you jump from baker to bakery in German – which is Bäcker and Bäckerei respectively – you change from masculine to feminine. The guy who does it is a dude but the work he is doing is feminine. German is a bit more complicated so we do not say THE baker and THE bakery – we make it clear: there is a difference – DER Bäcker (male) and DIE Bäckerei (female). And, alike English, you can turn almost anything into a business: bakery, winery, grocery etc… However, if you turn Lecker – like in LeckerBiss – into a noun, the adjective ‚tasty‘ becomes a noun for tasty things: Leckerein. The singular is feminine – die Leckerei – yet, not a work anymore but a thing. Most often by the way Leckerei is used for sweet things. And, yes Die Leckerei – that sounds a little bit like the Turkish name Dilek – a name for girls. At least that‘s what Dilek thought – a girl from Berlin. So when …

Upflating your kitchen

Do you live in a tinnie-tiny apartment and get kinda claustrophobic some time? There is a solution: just draw the world you wanna live in on your wall. You don’t believe me that it works – just take a look on the picture and convince yourself that it DOES work. If you are not great in drawing – the artist in the picture is called Mar Hernandez and works at ‘Espacio Oculto Madrid‘ – an artist community that is always looking out to organize more happenings (maybe even decorating your kitchen – ask them!). Bitter and sweet – my favourite way of eating sweet potato fries – a quick recipe

With sweet potato fries, it is usually love on the first bite. Preparing them is a bit of an art though. Don’t get me wrong, in fact, it is pretty simple, you just cook or bake the potatoes for a short time, fry them in oil, and put some chillie powder above them. However, every now and then, you will encounter some restaurant or food vendor who figured the ultimate trick how to prepare sweet potato fries. The result is just genuine, heavenly sticks! Although your home-made version is pretty awesome, those are by some dimensions better than yours – a galactic phenomenon. At least this was my thought when I tried the Sweet Potato French Fries from a vendor in the spectacular ‘Arminushalle‘ in Berlin Moabit (always worth a visit!! – see pic). My ambition is sparked – at some point I will figure out their recipe (eventhough the chef who sold me the fries said I should just enjoy – not all secrets are ment to be known). Poiera Dusty – an opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends

Recently, I described the liquor wine Maydie – quite an experience and a beautiful wine to be drunk alongside a dark chocolate desert. The chocolate artist Warren Laine-Naida now brought to my attention another wine – Poiera Dusty (see picture)- that excellently goes along with dark chocolate. If you think you see a mob on the wine’s label – you are right there is a mob on the wine’s label… Mobs and vaccuum cleaners are the distinction mark on all Poiera wine labels. The reason for this is simple: when the current wine-grower and owner – Jorge Moreira – bought Poiera, the slope was so dry that it reminded him of a dust desert. Since his first wine in 2001, this vineyard in the Dourotales region of Portugal has been critically acclaimed for their original and spirited wines. The wines are grown on a slope with northerly aspect by the way, i.e.tastes of Poiera wine tend to be more elegant compared to sun  bathed plants. Still on the hunt for THE egg plant recipe – and having discovered other important things instead

  Some time ago I wrote about a fantastic egg plant recipe. Well, I was promised to be soon provided with the recipe – it is from North Iran. There is a trick associated with it, cause best the egg plant is best prepared on a coal grill and the recipe needs to be adapted to electric kitchen ovens. In the meantime, I would like to elaborate a bit more about preparing egg plant for a mouse. The basic recipe of it is similar to a fish sauce recipe I published 2 years ago. In short, you need to quarter an egg plant. Then leave it in the oven for 45 minutes at 200°C. By baking, all the bitter flavours of egg plant are neutralized. Quite simple Once you are done backing peel and muse the egg plant by cutting it into a puree. Heat olive oil and add the egg plant together with cut garlic (one clove per agg plant) and turmeric (curcuma) as well as chillie and salt. Even this basic recipe will …

500 years of German Beer Purity Law!

Tomorrow – the 23rd of April – is the official day of the German Beer! Why? Cause that is the day the German Purity Law was proclaimed, i.e. back the on the 23rd of April 1516. It says that German beer can only be brewed from hops, barley and water. Later yeast was added to this mix as well (back then they were not yet able to produce yeast). The German beer brewer association prouds itself that this is the oldest, still maintained food purity law in the world (is that correct? Comment, if not!). And tomorrow, it will have been in place for 500 years – yeah! So, how is this date getting celebrated? Obviously, in Germany a lot. Every single beer brewery opens their doors to offer insight tours that day, hands out beers for free, offers ballon rides, etc. In Munich, for example, they are building a fountain of beer from which people can take drinks for free.
